Where are our fibers from?
We work really hard with our suppliers to make sure the fibers we use are sourced from the best possible places, where animals and workers are treated well, and this is really important to us. Please always feel free to email us for more information on fibers. Jeni is very happy to explain processes or give you a balanced view on something if you are not sure about what to choose.
Our Bluefaced Leicester Wool is British. It comes from small farms all over the UK but particularly in Wales, and is purchased through the British Wool Marketing Board on our behalf. The fibers are then scoured and superwash treated in the UK to the highest possible environmental standards.
Our Superwash Merino Wool comes from South America and is superwash treated in Europe to the highest OEKO-TEX® standard. Please see the section on superwash below for more information. Our standard Merino quality is 21.5 microns.
Our Non-Superwash Merino Wool comes from South America.
Our Peruvian Highland Wool is a non-superwash wool, sourced from small farms in the Peruvian mountains. It comes from a cross-breed of sheep that live at over 2,000m above sea level. These cross-breed animals derive from Corriedale and Merino, and the environment in which they live allows them to produce a wool that is dry, crimpy and durable.
Our Mohair is sourced from South Africa, and we are really excited to be offering RMS certified mohair fiber for all of our mohair-based yarns.
Our Alpaca comes from the Peruvian Andes. Again, it is sourced from smaller farmers whose way of life is their animals. The mill works closely with the alpaca farmers to improve breeding programs and helps them to produce the best quality alpaca in the world. The alpaca fibers are sorted by micron and by color by highly skilled women, it’s really fascinating to watch.
